I don't remember if Stronghold 2 had LAN capabilities(God knows where my copy is, so I can't install it to verify that), but I can explain why the need for update on MP. Everyone should have their copy updated to the latest patch. Also the servers are verifying the file integrity, so you can't use trainers or cracks. You can use a mini-image mounted in Daemon Tools though. So update the game and use the original disc, or a mounted mini-image for online play.
