The game needs to be installed on your PC, it's no different to a No-CD patch in a sense you can play the game without the CD and keep your original CD safe.

-A Mini BackUp Image is a miniature image file of the game CD, it contains a portion of the game CD's Table Of Contents (TOC), it contains all the necessary data to run the game from the hard drive, but does not contain any of the games actual data, it tricks the game that the CD is inserted. The Mini Backup Images are mounted with a CD emulator program such as Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%.
