battle for middle earth game.dat error

Hi all

I have just installed battle for middle earth and it keeps crashing as soon as I click on play with the game.dat error. I have searched the net for any ideas on fixes but no luck as yet. It may well be because I have a Nvidia geforce 4 mx 440 which appears to be unsupported on driver 7.1.8.9. It has been suggested that I roll back the driver to an earlier version but I am unable to find an earlier version on the net and mine came with 7.1.8.9. I have also managed to install the new patch for bfme but still not luck. Not helpful. Any ideas??? I have a young gamer who is desperate to play!!!!

Hi

Thanks for your help with the drivers Crypton. I have downloaded the earlier version but I am still getting the same error message. I have also tried downloading 2 patches for the game also with no luck. Annoyingly we tried the game disk on a lap top (low spec) and it worked first time! So we know it’s not a problem with the disk. My computer meets all the specs and now has the right vga drivers so I am at a lost as to what to try next. Any ideas anyone?

Could just be the card then, sounds like it to me, since the card is unsupported it is not garanteed to run the game.

Even though some users have the same model card, and run the game fine, the same card but different brand may have a major effect on if it works or not. But it does sound like the card, at the very least it may only work with 1 of the drivers, may have to try them all going from last one you tried to older, then next oldest ect..

You might want to pickup DriverCleaner if you plan on doing that, nVidia leaves a couple of its version dll files on the HDD when uninstalled and could possibly keep another driver from installing properly.

Hi this is john from spain,can someone help me with my problem?,because while im playing after few munites it repeats sounds,then black screen appears,then there is an error message saying EXEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION if i click ok or debug,another message will appear saying Runtime error game.dat runtime library,so WAHAT AM I going to do EA said it needs patches,then i downloaded from the net,and if i run the patch,when it extract game.dat there a message will appear saying "File not found,however,there is a file that is still the same,no update has done,the contents do not match".so WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?

In order to update the game using the patch, you need the "origional" game.dat file, not eh cracked one you replaced the origional with.

If you did not save the origional game.dat before putting the fixed one, then you will need to reinstall the game, apply patch update, then apply the fix.
